The Negro River borns in
one of the Colombian Plateau buttress, in
the Junai mountain, rounding 1.660 m of altitude and
named as Guainia. Its total course extension is of
about 1.700 Km, and almost 1.200 Kms, runs in
Brazilian territory.
The Negro river basin is quite irregular, with ramifications to southeast
(to its affluent course, the BRANCO river).
In Brazil, due to its physical characteristic, we may divide the
Negro river course in
differentiated spaces of navegability. The first devided course, with
249 of extension comes from the Amazonas river mouth up to Airão
city. Throughout all this length, the river has different
width, beginning with 2 Km in Manaus city and enlarging
to 24 Km near Anavilhanas archipelago ( largest archipelago of the world), narrowing
again to 3 Km at the end of the space and with many islands, and many
navigable places.
The following space, has around 100 Km and runs between Airão
city and Branco river bar. The river runs in a more regular bed and for
experts, doesn't show any navigability problems
The third space runs along between Branco river bar and
Tapuruquara villa, with about 452 Km of extension. The river width is also irregular,
with great depths variation. Up to Tupuruquara , the
river began and has many rapidses and waterfalls.
The general steepness of Negro river, up to where it presents typical
characteristics of plain river, from its mouth, in Amazonas river up
to Curicuari bar, (Km 955) is of 3 cm/Km.
