DETAILED INFORMATION ABOUT JURUÁ RIVER

INFORMATION

Tributary of the  right margin of Amazonas, Juruá has its nascent in the Mountain of Contamana, in Perú, in quota from the order of 450m. Its total length is approximately 3.350 Km. Its mouth is located in front of the island of the Conscience, in the proximites of the Villla of Tamaniqua.

The hidrographic basin, constituted by Juruá and its tributaries, has 1.200 Km. of extension. The type of drainage net is pararel with most of the tributaries , flowing in the sense fo the general slope of the basin, making relatively small angles with the main river.

High Juruá, from its nascent to the Villa of Taumaturgo, doesn´t present favorable conditions to the sailing. The medum and the low course of the river, with plain characteristics, and extension of 3.120 Km are appropriate to sailing. Medium Juruá extends between the Villa of Taumaturgop and the bar of the river Tarauacá, in an extension fo more than 1, 2 thousand Km.

The midium slope of this space, is 8cm/Km. The width varies between 150m, in the inferior extremity and 60m to amount. The depth, during the drought , goes down to 0,40m or 0,50 in its inferior part, that is located between the bar of the river  Gregório and the river Tarauacá , due to the deposit of   sediment in its navigable canal. In the canal, formed by the obstructions, the flow of the river is accentuated, therefore it doesn´t correspond to the general slope, verified  in the main axis. The marginal lands, generally, are plane and shallow, providing the formation of lakes ind igarapés. The collapse of the ravines can be noticed, in the whole extension fo the way, and the degenerated  material forms obstructions in the navigable way and modifications in the canal. The winding is intense. During the flood, the level of water goes up  from 8 to 10 m, lowering again during the drought.

Low Juruá extends from the bar of the river Tarauacá to its mouth, in Amazonas, in the quota of 42m. The medium slope is approximately of 4cm/Km. It has basically the same characteristics of the medium course: exessive winding, obstruction of the navigable way by crumbled material that comes from the  ravines and rare points of stones. Marginal depressions become ponds, at times of flood. In great extensions, the plane lands and shallow form igarapés. The width of the river, in the mouth, has about 500m, being narrowed, with a lot of variations, approximately about 150m in the superior limit of the way. Amazonas, with its great level of variations, dams, during the flood ot the waters of Juruá, reducing the speed of the current to great distances from the mouth. This is composed by three denominated arms: Guará, Araricoara and FuroComadre. This last arm  has the lake Capucá as its intermediary point. In the amount of the mouth, many canals and paranas serve as drain for existent lakes in these areas.
